Do you want to win the fight against fibromyalgia? This mystery illness can be painful and exhausting, but Body Ecology principles can help you feel better naturally! |
Fibromyalgia is a puzzle for the medical field and for those who suffer from it.
This chronic illness affects roughly 5% of the population1 (that’s 6 million Americans!), and women are at much greater risk than men. In fact, fibromyalgia occurs seven times more frequently in women than in men.2
Characterized by unbearable pain and severe fatigue, fibromyalgia is an illness of our modern world that continues to defy conventional treatments.
Fibromyalgia: A Medical Mystery Defined
Experts call fibromyalgia “the Great Imitator” because it is an illness whose symptoms often mimic other illnesses and diseases.
Generally, fibromyalgia is known for causing widespread pain in your body and debilitating fatigue that makes even the smallest tasks exhausting.
But fibromyalgia often comes with a host of other symptoms including:
At present, no specific test exists to diagnose fibromyalgia. Doctors may administer a number of diagnostics to rule out other conditions like Multiple Sclerosis and Crohn’s disease, but fibromyalgia largely remains a medical mystery.
Who Is At Risk?
Women suffer from fibromyalgia much more so than men. No one is quite sure why, but besides gender, there are some other factors that put you more at risk for fibromyalgia. 3
Living With Fibromyalgia
Some people describe feeling pain all over their body (inside and out) and experiencing exhaustion so severe that day-to-day functioning becomes difficult. On top of that, many sufferers of fibromyalgia cannot communicate the severity of their symptoms to doctors, friends or family. Whatever you do don’t accept a diagnosis of fibromyalgia as something you can’t overcome and resign yourself to “live with it”. At Body Ecology we have consistently helped many people move from this frustrating diagnosis to wellness. I happen to be one of those people who had fibromyalgia. But that was long ago. I want to help you get well too.
Other risk factors associated with fibromyalgia include: 4
In the face of such serious symptoms and co-occurring illnesses, I remain convinced that the key to healing chronic illnesses like fibromyalgia is to understand the causes.
What Causes Fibromyalgia?
Perhaps one of the most interesting and debated facets of this puzzling disease is what actually causes it.
Researchers don’t always agree, but some of their theories are particularly interesting. Scientists and doctors have implicated sleep disturbances, trauma or injury, changes in muscle metabolism and even abnormalities of your sympathetic nervous system in the development of fibromyalgia. 5
But to me, the most fascinating theory links fibromyalgia to infection.
More than a few studies have linked fibromyalgia prevalence to various kinds of infections, from mycoplasma blood infection6 to the Hepatitis C virus. 7
Doctors and researchers may not be sure of exactly what causes fibromyalgia, but studies point to viral, bacterial and fungal infections and chronic inflammation as key components to this syndrome.
It would make sense, then, to prevent and treat viral, bacterial and yeast infections and to follow a protocol that decreases inflammation in order to ease the painful symptoms of fibromyalgia and the conditions that occur alongside it.
